Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Shathys smiles nonchalantly.
"I'm from here and there, mostly from a land I don't remember much anymore, suppose I set out to make a name or legend of myself but I seem to have gotten sidetracked from that."
"Yourself, Jack? From where do you hail?"

"The trading town of Crying leaf just off the edge of the Velashu uplands. Working as an investigator there for the Church of Ioun, lovely work really." He unconsciously scratches around his fake eye.
"And you, young woman? Why did you come to this small town in the middle of nowhere?"

"I come from Chelaxian, not far from here. But, uhm, the citylife didn't really agree with me, so i went to the dwarven city of Janderhoff. I'm fluent in dwarven. After a few years there i decided that it was time to move on, i guess i have a large appetite for life, i need experiences." Shara says with a smile, hoping that her companions wont ask too much about Chelaxian and why she left. She's nervous about their reaction to her ancestry and temper.

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Jack and Shathys, you notice that you are attracting rather more attention than usual. A group of young women throw bashful glances your way, and when your eyes catch theirs, they burst into giggles. Several shopkeepers stop whatever they're doing and stare openly at you. A pair of guardsmen raise their hands in salute as they pass. In general, you are turning a lot of heads.
Shara doesn't notice a damn thing.

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Before long, you find yourself standing before the walls of the garrison. The guards nod at you as you pass through the gates, and as you make your way down to the dungeons, you hear the voice of Belor Hemlock.
"...imbeciles! I should have you both flogged!"
As you enter the room, a strange scene unfolds before you. Two guardsmen looking extremely ashamed of themselves are being verbally - and physically - berated by a furious Belor. The cell behind them is currently occupied by not one, but two dead goblins.

Shathys immediately loses his temper, Striding forward, eyes glowing with rage.
"What did you fools do?!" Shathys roars, Mishka bearing her fangs and emitting a feral growl.
"Tell me what happened and be quick about it, else you'll be joining those goblins in the pile."

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
"Apparently," Belor says, "These idiots can't handle a single goblin. You heard him, soldier. Tell the man what happened."
One of the guards clears his throat. "Uh, well, sir, it was like this: the little creep was making a terrible ruckus. Screaming and banging on the bars and such. When we went in to tie him to the cot, he jumped at me like a rabid dog. I barely had time to get my sword out before it impaled itself on it."

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Shathys speaks in a soft, deadly voice.
"Do you recall anything the goblin may have said? Anything to cause him to make a ruckus, or are you such a fool that you cannot recall a single important detail?"
"Be warned, Friend." Shathys' mouth peels into a smile, more of a show of teeth than much else.
"That if you cost us the only way to get to the goblin camp, the only way to resolve the massacre done by the goblins. I'm coming for you and your family, so pray. Pray to whatever deity you worship that you remember. Every. Single. Detail."

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
The guardsman's expression changes from shame to astonishment to anger, and he grabs the hilt of his sword.
Belor's head turns slowly towards Shathys. "What did you just say?" he asks. His voice is very, very cold.

"Woah woah woah woah" Jack puts a hand on Shathys' shoulder.
"He didn't mean it that way, he simply got caught up in the heat of the moment." Jack smiles reassuringly. "Let me talk to him for a moment." He pulls Shathys to the side.
"I thought I told you we can't go accusing or threatening people's lives. That's for the monsters and bad people!" He turns back on Belor.
"I apologize for my friend, but it's really important information. Is there anything you can tell us?"

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Shathys sighs heavily, leaning against a wall.
"I guess you're right, Jack."
Shathys however, remains defiant, never dropping his gaze from Belor's eyes.
"I...Apologize." Shathys growls, eyeing the guard with the hand on his sword hilt.

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Belor visibly relaxes, but he still has an icy frown on his face. "Heated tempers are no strangers to me," he says. "But I'll not have you threaten anyone from Sandpoint. Make sure it doesn't happen again." He turns to Jack. "As for the information, I might have someone who can help. She'll be here in a day or two. If you'll stay in town for the next couple of days, I'll contact you when I have news."
Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Shathys' interest peaks. "Who, pray tell, is this person? I don't think we'll be going anywhere in the next few days. Though who is this person and how would they be of help if they have not even been around to witness the events?"

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
"She's an elf ranger who passes through here once or twice per season. She knows the hinterlands better than anyone. If there's anything to know about the goblins, she will."
Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
"I see, We'll look forward to hearing from you then, in the meantime is there anything that we would be able to assist with? Or are we free to enjoy the hospitality of Sandpoint for the next while?

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
"I suggest you take a couple of days off, yes. I'm sure your names have gotten around by now."
Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Noticeably unaffected by the situation with the goblin, Shara smiles at Belor and says "Thanks for your assistance though, I am sure we'll be enjoying our prolonged stay in Sandpoint. I know I've enjoyed my stay until now".

- Spoiler:
- Insight to see if the guards did it on purpose or if they know more 10+4 = 14
I could track it down in a city, sure, important corpses leaves clues. But in the nature?
To the nine hells with those hippy types.
"That would be fine." He smiles.

Re: Rise of The Runelords 1 - Burnt Offerings
Insight check:
- Spoiler:
- You sense no deceit in the guards. Given the physical evidence, their story seems likely. Goblins aren't rational creatures, and it's not unnatural for them to taunt their captors.
